Starred Books from the past year
Maggie Helwig. Canadian.
I read three of her books and can recommend them all, if you don't mind getting hit upside the head with the godawful things that people can do to other humans.
Girls Fall Down
Between Mountains
Where She Was Standing
I read these in the last month.
Books on my starred list since the last ones include
Colin Cotterill, The Coroner's Lunch
Ami McKay, The Birth House
Wayne Johnston, The Navigator of New York
Michael Chabon, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. (I got this for 50 cents at the Library book sale. Hoorah!!)
Kate Taylor, Mme Proust and the Kosher Kitchen (despite "leak soup" twice)
Ann Patchett, The Magician's Assistant
Joe Fiorito, The Song Beneath the Ice
Jules Hardy, Altered Land (this is from Sept. 07, and I have NO memory of it; it's starred in my green notebook, though)
Thomas King, Green Grass, Running Water. Recommended by Katy
Kamila Shamsi, Kartography --- Look for this one, Katy.
Jacqueline Mitchard, Still Summer. All of her books are worth reading.
A.S. Byatt, Possession. Dick Vission called her the best writer in English today, or something like that. A great book for sure.
Paul Glennon, The Dodecahedron
John Banville, The Sea
Melissa Bank, The Wonder Spot
Lynn Truss, Eats, Shoots and Leaves
William Gibson, Spook Country (despite typos)
Ann Patchett, Run
Michael Ondaatje, Divisadero
Richard Russo, Bridge of Sighs
Pete Hamill, Snow in August
Caroline Adderson, A History of Forgetting
Monique Proulx, The Heart is an Involuntary Muscle
Robert McCammon, Boy's Life. I re-read this, and liked it as much the second time. Those magical childhood books always get to me.
Wayne Johnston, The Colony of Unrequited Dreams. More than anyone ever wanted to know about Joey Smallwood.
Jim Crace, The Pesthouse. This one is amazing.
