Prepositions
The ubiquitous plural apostrophe annoyance is being replaced by the realization that many people don't have a clue about prepositions. Today's example is from an article about a local artist who won a well-deserved week in residence at an artsy place. The award was "based off of" examples of the artist's work. It should be "based on", of course. On is the opposite of off, isn't it? I have seen several examples of this use of the opposite preposition lately, and I shudder.
I just remembered another example. The lovely and talented choir Gracenote was said to rehearse "out of" a particular church. No, they rehearse IN a church.
It should be so simple.
